The Kindle app provides one of the most refined digital reading experiences available, but many readers struggle to maintain consistent reading habits over time. To explore new ways of increasing engagement, this master’s project investigated how minimal gamification and behavioral design could transform reading into a more immersive and recurring habit.

The concept introduces subtle motivational mechanics — such as progress indicators, achievements, streaks, and challenges — designed to encourage reading continuity while preserving the simplicity and focus of the Kindle experience.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Challenge
Many digital readers struggle to maintain consistent reading habits. While the Kindle app offers a strong reading experience, it lacks motivational triggers that encourage users to return regularly. Without visible progress, rewards, or challenges, engagement may decrease over time, reducing reading frequency and long-term retention.
User interviews and behavioral design frameworks such as Octalysis and Self-Determination Theory revealed that readers respond positively to subtle progress feedback and lightweight challenges. Journey mapping also highlighted motivation drop-off points, particularly after finishing a book or during long breaks between reading sessions.
Research

Prototype testing with 15 participants showed positive engagement signals. Users reported a stronger desire to return to the app daily and appreciated the “reward without pressure” approach. Visible progress indicators increased their sense of accomplishment, while the minimalist design preserved the core reading experience.

The concept also created opportunities for future product evolution, including improved retention, A/B testing of challenge systems, and potential community features such as shared reading challenges.
